What are each of the four organizations that compose Homeland Security?

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF)
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
U.S. Marshals Service (USMS)

What is each of their roles in combating terrorism?

The FBI is the lead agency for combating domestic terrorism and a key support agency for combating international terrorism. The top three priority areas are to protect the United States from terrorist attack, to protect the United States against foreign intelligence operations and espionage, and to protect the United States against cybor-based attacks and high-technology crimes. The FBI has recently been given reform efforts to battle terrorism. It can monitor Internet sites, libraries, churches, and political organizations.

The ATF is responsible for all the federal laws relating to firearms, explosives, and arson; it works with federal, state, and local law enforcement organization and seeks to battle terrorism.

The DEA to combat terrorism investigates and prepares the prosecution of suspects for violations under all federal drug-trafficking laws. It conducts relations with drug-enforcement officials of foreign governments.

The USMS is one of the oldest federal law enforcement agencies. Their function is to pursue and arrest DEA fugitives, suspects wanted for federal drug violations. Their primary role and mission is to provide for the security and to obey, execute, and enforce all orders of the United States District Courts. They monitor, assess, and investigate threats made against judical personnel, witnesses and victims in order to ensure their safety.
